We are transferred from the airport to Lancaster.

Boarding - This 8-day America’s Junction excursion begins with an overnight stay in St. Louis, MO, founded by French fur traders in 1764. In 1803, Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory to President Thomas Jefferson as part of the Louisiana Purchase. St. Louis then became known as “the Gateway to the West” because of the westward movement of Americans through the city. The gleaming Gateway Arch, completed in 1965, towers over the Upper Mississippi River as a symbol of America’s opening of the west to commerce and settlement. The Museum of Westward Expansion (located below the arch) preserves some of the rarest artifacts from the days of Lewis and Clark.

Barging - The mighty Upper Mississippi River begins as a small clear creek that rushes out of Lake Itasca in northwestern Minnesota and continues on a journey of 2,350 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. The Upper Mississippi flows nearly 900 miles, until its confluence with the Ilinois and Missouri Rivers above St. Louis, MO, and joins the Ohio River at Cairo, IL. Its depth is controlled by a series of locks and dams as it flows through scenic lakes, bluffs, marsh and islands southward to Alton, IL, just north of St. Louis, MO. The Illinois River is formed at the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee Rivers approximately 50 miles southwest of Chicago, IL, and flows 273 miles across the state where it joins the Mississippi River near Grafton, IL, approximately 38 river miles north of St. Louis, MO.

Host Landings Along The Way - Grafton, IL, is a quaint American river town, located at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, and founded in 1836, by James Mason. The town is winter home of the American bald eagle, and you’ll have time to visit the quaint specialty shops and antique stores on Front Street. We’ll visit Alton, IL, a town with natural harbor bluffs and hilly terrain that sets it apart from the surrounding area. This quaint town has many interesting stories, from being a major stop on the Underground Railroad, which secretly aided runaway slaves, to being home to the world’s tallest man, Robert Pershing Wadlow. We’ll also view the Piasa (Pie-zaw) Bird engraving on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. In Havana, IL, we will tour Dickson Mounds State Museum., a National Historic Site, which is one of the major onsite archaeological museums in the country, and explores the world of the American Indian in an awe-inspiring journey through 12,000 years of human experience. We’ll also visit Lincoln’s New Salem Historical Site, a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. We’ll visit Peoria, IL, once the “Whiskey Capital of America.” We’ll visit Wheel O’Time Museum, which offers a display of vintage classic autos, gas engines, fire engines, airplanes, tractors, musical instruments, juke boxes, toys, dolls, an animated miniature circus and many “hands-on” displays. You ‘ll also enjoy a city tour and get a chance to see Grand View Drive, which Teddy Roosevelt said is “The grandest view in the world!”

Destination Landing - This excursion ends where it began in St. Louis, MO. Upon disembarkation, a narrated limited city tour of St. Louis will be provided on the way to the airport for those guests with flights 1:00 pm or later.

After breakfast, we'll view Mount Rushmore with its colossal, sculpted heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, created under the direction of Gutzon Gorglum. Next we see the Crazy Horse Memorial, the largest statue in the world. When completed, the mountain carving will stand 563 feet high and 641 feet long and will be carved in the round. Sculptor Korzak Ziolkowski began the project in 1948 at the request of Lakota elders who wanted "the white man to know the red man has great heroes, too." All four faces on Mount Rushmore would fit inside just Crazy Horse's head! The face of Crazy Horse was completed on June 3, 1998 marking 40 years of progress on the sculpture. Nearly everyone who visits San Francisco falls in love with it. Today a local guide will show us the highlights of this unforgettable city. We'll begin with a stop on top of Twin Peaks for a stunning view of the bay area. Next we'll visit Vista Point, Cliff House and Seal Rock. Of course, no visit to San Francisco would be complete without a cruise on the San Francisco Bay. We pass under the Golden Gate Bridge for excellent photo opportunities. Cruising close to the Marine Headlands, we head past Angle Island and around Alcatraz, before returning to Fisherman's Wharf. Tonight, we'll enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the many fine restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf. (B, D)

TUE, JUL 8 (Day 25)
(Seattle-San Francisco group flies home today.) Today we travel northeast, through Sacramento, arriving in the Lake Tahoe area for lunch. We'll enjoy dinner tonight and overnight accommodations in Salt Lake City. (CB, D)

TUE, JUN 17 (Day 2)
Following breakfast at our hotel, we drive a short distance to nearby Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It is here that we find the Hoover Dam. At 726 feet high, it is one of the highest concrete dams ever constructed. Completed in 1936, the dam impounds Lake Mead, one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. A scenic overlook atop the center provides tremendous views of the dam and Lake Mead. This afternoon, we'll travel northeast into Utah, where we have our overnight accommodations. (B, D)

WED, JUN 18 (Day 3)
Today, we travel a short distance to Zion National Park. Nature at its most eloquent, Zion is a place of towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, spectacular arches, intermittent waterfalls and seeping springs. Designated in 1919, Zion is Utah's oldest national park. Zion's towers and monoliths offer a quiet grandeur. The formations in stone are on a grand scale, soaring thousands of feet above us from the lush floor of Zion Canyon. Since Zion is Utah's most heavily used park, with nearly three million visitors per year, a free shuttle transportation system is in place. By using the shuttle trams, we can enjoy Zion's lofty formations such as The Great White Throne, The Watchman, Angels Landing and Weeping Rock. We'll enjoy an entire day exploring the park before traveling to Mount Carmel Junction for our dinner and overnight. (CB, D)

THU, JUN 19 (Day 4)
Today is devoted to visiting, seeing and exploring Bryce Canyon National Park. Thousands of delicately carved spires, called 'hoodoos', rise in brilliant color from the amphitheatres of Bryce. The Park does not contain one main canyon, but rather a dozen smaller ravines eroded into the east side of a ridge at the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The formations are smaller and more intricate than those at Zion. We'll drive past many of Bryce's most famous viewpoints, including Sunrise, Sunset, Rainbow, Yovimpa and Inspiration Points. This is sure to be a day filled with awe as we view God's amazing handiwork. Our evening meal and overnight are again in Mount Carmel Junction. (B, D)

FRI, JUN 20 (Day 5)
Today is a day of travel as we make our way to the south rim of the spectacular Grand Canyon. We'll enjoy our evening meal here, and overnight at the Thunderbird Lodge located within Grand Canyon Village. The Lodge is located just steps from the rim of the canyon. There is quite possibly no other place on earth where you can awaken to such spectacular splendor. (B, D)

SAT, JUN 21 (Day 6)
Today is a full day to do as you please at the Grand Canyon. You may want to take advantage of one of the many Ranger activities offered throughout the day.
