Required Travel Documents A photo ID is required when you check in at the airport for foreign or domestic travel. If you are a U.S. citizen and planning on traveling outside of the United States in 2007, some of the border regulations have changed, while some remain the same. You should carry some proof of citizenship any time you go outside the United States. The key is your method of transportation across the border (Flying = Passport; Motorcoach or Ship = Proof of Citizenship).
